The crossing
They met on a friend’s felucca at sunset. He untied the rope, she asked whether he actually knew what he was doing, and he did not.

He asked her in the middle of the river, where she could not walk away — her words, retold at every family gathering since.

The two families walked the marsa together and agreed on one thing before anything else: the wedding would be on the water.
